Often times people will only look at the bottom line price when choosing a web site developer, but there are so many other things to take in to consideration! Below is a list of things to watch out for:
How much will website design and web maintenance cost?
There are many companies out there that will give you a basic web site, with very few web pages and will build your site based on a template design. This will usually only cost you a couple hundred dollars, which isn’t that bad of a deal if you don’t mind the fact that your design will look like other web sites on the internet. Although this is a cheap website design method to choose, you need to understand that this company will charge you in the future to make updates. Usually these updates cost $40 to $100 per hour to make, and that can get very pricey if you just need to make very simple changes on a weekly or monthly basis! That is where our next subject comes in handy - see below.
Can you perform your own web maintenance in the future?
So many website design customers would have saved huge amounts of money if they knew that they could hire a company that would create a professional web site design for them that would allow updates to be made by you; the customer in the future. Think of it this way; let’s say that you needed to make updates once a week that cost you $60 per update on a web site that cost you only $200 to begin with. That means you are spending $240 a month to maintain this web site. Ultimately you will spend $720 per year to update this web site, and over several years that can get pricey! If you choose a company that would allow you to handle web site maintenance by yourself, you may have paid an extra $500 or $1000 - however you would have saved a lot of change in the long run!

Being that the new year is around the corner I am sure many of you have the goal of improving your Google’s Page Rank. Some obvious tips, don’t get too spammy with your favorite keyword, and keep that new content coming. There are some hidden pitfalls though, and some of them are not that easy to spot.
One PR killer can be the simple switching of the IP address for your server. Over the years I have had a couple of sites simply tank after I upgraded my servers. The results were new IP’s, I didn’t even think about that, and I got a sudden drop in PR. I also learned from that lesson PR isn’t everything. I still receive great traffic for those sites from the search engines. It’s hard to think about long term decisions for the things we do online, but when picking out where you will host your site and how will you host your site should be big ones. WebHostingRating has a lot of web hosting articles that go into more detail about the effects of PR and your server’s IP. What’s the PR of your hosting company?
Another killer is hosting several domains on one IP. It’s common practice for hosting companies to do this, but you may get some SEO guys telling you that ideally that IP should be all you. It’s similar to registering your domain for ten years or life. You are descretely giving your site authority by appearing as a professional orgarnization, and not as a turn and burn site.

Many business owners have now discovered the importance of creating a compelling and professional website to engage visitors, build their trust, and turn them into customers. Website owners used to have to decide between form and function. This resulted in millions of flashy websites that intrigued visitors, but provided no value or reason for them to return. Alternatively, some websites provided significant value, but were amateurish and not visually pleasing. The fact that the search engines favored simple, sloppy websites at the time made matters even worse.
How the internet has changed! If you are a beginning web developer, you can learn to create a compelling and professional website that will captivate visitors and provide them with value that makes them want to return. For most business owners, that means repeat customer relationships and increased profit. The following paragraphs detail what a web developer does, including the basics of how to design an attractive website that will give a business a competitive edge.
The Problem Of A Web Developer
It used to be a “one or the other” choice when it came to designing websites: artistic form or valuable function. Today, a web developer can design a website that provides the best of both. Simple, easy to figure out navigation is seamlessly blended within an artistic framework. Choosing the right animations, fonts, and graphics can add personality to a website without sacrificing its functionality.

Managing domain name registrations is part of a Web developers job. However, it can be a pain in the butt and, as one developer found out, expensive if you mess up.
The Dallas Morning News is reporting that Yuma Solutions, the Web developer for the George Bush presidential library, accidentally let its domain name expire. Another firm snatched it up for $10 and charged Yuma $35,000 to get it back. This is a follow up to a Dallas Morning News story from April.
I have mixed emotions about this. It was another Web developer - Raleigh, NC-based Illuminati Karate - that snatched the domain after trolling a list of expiring domain names.
No question that Yuma made a mistake to let it expire. In fact, domain registrars are second only to magazines when it comes to early and frequent reminders about upcoming expirations. Some email box somewhere was likely stuffed with reminders and warnings. And, Yuma was lucky to get it back. Paying some premium is expected. I would consider a 350,000% return to be somewhat excessive, but as I said, they were lucky to get it back.
However, Illuminati Karate couldn’t just take the money. It seems that a representative of the company was all too eager to boast of the company’s domain name prowess to the Dallas Morning News. The boast included the particulars of the transaction, including pricing. Certain quotes teeter on the brink of gloating.
